3.2 RESIDENCE PERMIT[]

3.2.1 EU citizens

Nationals of the European Union, the European Economic Area or Switzerland do not need a residence permit, but often you have to provide proof of health insurance and proof of financial resources in order to register with the residents' registration office.


3.2.2 Non-EU Nationals

After entering Germany, the visa will be converted to a residence permit for study purposes. In order to get the residence permit, you have to apply to the local immigration authorities before your visa expires:

• Step 1: You register with the municipality within one week after your arrival. Bring your passport and confirmation of your address in Lübeck, signed by the landlord as described above.

• Make an online appointment with Meldestelle Lübeck (Registration as inhabitant) at least 1 month before moving to Lübeck.


• Attend the appointment:

Bürgerservicebüro Innenstadt (Center City Office) wait until your waiting number is called Königstraße 55-57, 23552 Lübeck

• Step 2: Book an online Residence Permit Appointment with the local Immigration Authority in order to apply for the residence permit.

• Important documents are:

o Proof of financial means

o German health insurance

o your valid passport, possibly with visa, Passport-size photo

o a completed and signed housing confirmation from your landlord

o Admission letter or certificate of matriculation from your German university,

o your registration confirmation from the residents' registration office

o Service charge appx 130 Euro in cash


Generally, this will be a residence permit issued by the local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) in the relevant university town initially for a maximum of 2 years. The residence permit can only be issued up to 3 months before the passport becomes null and void.
